What I am
Simply put, I am silk … but you can call me playsilk, cape, veil, wing, or any name actually … because I’m open-ended. I’m the source of creative, imaginative play and am used in anything from dress-up to fort-building and more!
How I work
There are no set directions - it’s all about open-ended play. Put me into the hands of kids, and you’ll be amazed at all the things they find to do! They make pirate scarves, belts, tunics, princess veils, dresses … Sometimes, I am water to sail a boat on or I’m a rainbow flying in the wind at the beach. Or sometimes, I’m clipped onto any hard surface to bring a little bit of color, light, and coziness to any room.
My maker, Sarah, is like summer … she is a woman who loves the full spectrum of color, has a vibrancy of life, and hopes that every family will experience the joy of ‘rainbow play.’ She started hand dyeing playsilks 25 years ago for her son who loved to dress up and pretend play. The neighborhood kids loved the silks, as did the local Waldorf school teachers. She then sewed a birthday cape, dyed a rainbow on a silk, screen printed the star pattern, and continued to develop new toys based on what her three children and their friends needed as props in their rich, imaginative play. Today, the same son (Josh) works in the family business doing graphic design and e-commerce!
